Non-Invasive Vagus Nerve Stimulation (GammaCore)

This is a non-invasive device which has been shown to have some efficacy in cluster headache. Vagus nerve stimulation sends electrical signals along a nerve, called the vagus nerve, parts of which run through the neck to the brain. It is not certain how vagus nerve stimulation treats and prevents headaches, but data suggest that it may work by sending signals into the brain that reduce the amount of chemicals, associated with headache symptoms.

It is a handheld device which is placed on your neck. The results vary from person to person. IT can be used several times a day as a preventative or as an acute treatment.  You will be shown how to use it by your doctor.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

This device sends electrical signals along the greater occipital nerve, which are then transmitted to the brain. External occipital neurostimulation is used to treat headache disorders. It involves placing the device against the back of the head for a second to deliver a very brief pre-set magnetic pulse. Patients may self-fund this treatment

Cefaly Device

This device works on the trigeminal nerve which is a nerve in the head. The device is positioned on the forehead and through electrodes it delivers micro pulses to stimulate the nerve. It can be used during an attack, leaving it on for an hour as it buzzes the nerves going into the brain. It can also be used every evening for 20 minutes to prevent pain. The evidence is limited in migraine and is something that is self-funded.
